Blockchain, cryptocurrency, tokens, NFTs… these are some of the most searched key terms in the fintech industry today, mainly because these crypto terms are current and “new,” and to some, they may seem overly complex.

If you’re interested in DeFi or TradFi you’ll stumble across one or more of these terms to know, which is why we thought we’d share a comprehensive glossary to make these concepts simple and digestible.

This glossary will bring you up to speed with all the relevant DeFi and TradFi terms to know – all geared towards bolstering the understanding and widespread application of all of these concepts within the industry and beyond.

Bridge

n the blockchain industry, a ‘bridge’ is a tool that makes it possible to port assets from one blockchain to another. Bridges work by creating synthetic derivatives that represent an asset from another blockchain. Bridges are often centralised.

Bull Market

Periods of time where a market is displaying a positive trend.

Buy Wall

A large amount of demand at a specific price point in the order book for a particular market.

Bytecode

A computer object code that is processed by a program. Bytecode is a low-level programming language which is compiled from high-level programming languages.

Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT)

Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) is a trait of decentralized, permissionless systems which are capable of successfully identifying and rejecting dishonest or faulty information.

Candlestick

A type of price chart used in technical analysis that displays the open, close, high, and low prices within a certain period.

Capitulation

A period of time where investors rapidly sell their holdings as they rush in an attempt to preserve wealth.

CeFi (Centralized Finance)

The concept of having a centralized authority manage the funds in an ecosystem.

Censorship-resistance

The property of blockchain networks that prevents an entity from altering its transaction history.

Central Bank

A financial institution that manages the currency and monetary policy of a state or formal monetary union and oversees the commercial banking system.

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The hardware component of a computer that is responsible for interpreting the instructions of computer programs and executing operations.

Cipher

A method for the encryption and decryption of data.

Circulating Supply

The best approximation of the number of coins or tokens for a cryptocurrency project that are circulating in the market.

Cloud

A shared pool of resources that are made available to multiple users through the internet.

Coin

A cryptocurrency that is independent of any other platform and is used as an exchange of value.

Collateral

Property or assets that are pledged by a borrower against the value of a loan to guarantee that the borrower will complete repayment.

Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)

The U.S. agency responsible for the regulation of derivatives markets including options, swaps and futures contracts.

Compliance Officer

A person who is employed to ensure that a company does not contravene any statutes or regulations which apply to its activities.

Confirmation Time

The time it takes for a transaction submitted to the network to be recorded and confirmed into a block.

Confluence

The combination of multiple investment methods, technical indicators or trading signals to form a more reliable strategy.

Consensus

the state in which actors and nodes on a blockchain network arrive at a universal truth (with respect to the network in question).

Consensus Mechanism

an algorithmic workflow that is used to facilitate and achieve consensus in a uniform manner across a blockchain network. The two most popular consensus mechanisms are Proof-of-Work (PoW) and Proof-of-Stake (PoS).

Consumer Price Index (CPI)

A measure used to track the average change in prices over time as a way to determine inflation.

Credentials

A users personal information, such as a username, password and email address.

Cryptocurrency

An encrypted data string that denotes a unit of currency used as a medium of exchange in a peer-to-peer (P2P) economic system.
